In the summer of 1871, registered packages passing to and fro from Chicago to a town in the interior of Dakota Territory were reported to the department as rifled. The man who's job it was to investigate this further was a Mr Furay. He was required to travel a route of over eighty miles by stagecoach, meeting various characters and postmasters along the way, and looking out for clues as to who, where and how this crime was being commited..
